Chapter 7

Back at the Priorate Knights’ headquarters, Kadorax was greeted by an unexpected scene. A few unarmored knights stood casually around an outdoor fire, and their company was rather strange: Atticus stood to one side with a wooden cup, occasionally taking slow sips without adding anything to the lively conversation, and across from him was Elise, a goblet in her right hand and an impressive array of daggers glinting in the firelight around her waist.

“We need a chaplain,” Kadorax called before addressing his rival’s unanticipated presence.

The fireside gathering turned as one, and then two of the knights rushed to Lady Alexandrina’s side to bring her into the priory for proper healing.

“Well, well, well,” Elise mused, smiling a sinister smile. A Blackened Blade dressed in dark leather stepped out of the shadows to join his leader at the fire.

An overt threat, Kadorax thought, but he also knew that positions of power didn’t remain in the same hands for long without extensive security measures. The assassin behind her was certainly adequate security.

“Elise,” he stated flatly. “What brings you to Oscine City? Decided to join the war?”

The woman took another sip from her goblet and shook her head. “The war already came to Darkarrow,” she cryptically answered.

“What do you mean?” Kadorax took a step toward the fire, and the others made room for him, Syzak, and Brinna.

Elise downed the rest of her drink and handed her goblet off to the Blackened Blade lackey waiting patiently at her elbow. “I take it you were unsuccessful? You failed to find the princess, yes?”

Kadorax nodded. “Not yet.”

The woman let out a long sigh. Meeting Kadorax’s eyes for the first time, she said, “We know why they need her. One of my crews captured a group of jackal priests. They need royal blood for a ritual. They’re going to sacrifice her in the north to summon their god. It turns out the Gar’kesh are lesser denizens of the jackal hierarchy. Their god will make the Gar’kesh look like ants.”

“And Darkarrow? There’s been an attack?”

The woman’s expression clouded. “Sacked,” she stated. “Partially razed. What’s left is in poor shape.”

Kadorax waited a long moment as he considered the implications. The jackals knew who would be best positioned to resist their plans, and they had acted accordingly, eliminating the strongest threats before they could manifest. That explained attacks against both Priorate Knight and Blackened Blade strongholds.

After a while, Syzak was first to break the heavy silence. “So what’s the next move? Continue to hunt the princess here in Oscine City?”

Surprisingly, it was Atticus who responded. “The knights can continue the hunt here, I believe. More specialized skills are needed elsewhere. Your skills and mine. Our skills.”

“Remember that temple you raided?” Elise asked, her smile absolutely devious.

Kadorax dipped his head, knowing full well what the woman was getting to. “The first Gar’kesh. The temple where we . . . met our ends.”

“Exactly,” Elise went on. “That is the temple where they’re going to take the princess. That is where they need to be to conduct their ritual.
